You may have heard of people using lots of fruit and vegetable juices and enemas to self-treat cancer and chronic diseases? You may also have heard of people abstaining from meat and dairy for fear of developing cancer? Today, I want to introduce you to the book The Gerson Therapy: The Proven Nutritional Program to Fight Cancer and Other Illnesses, a book that presents a fairly comprehensive treatment method using the techniques you've heard of above.
The core of the method is a diet consisting of fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables and 13 glasses of fresh fruit and vegetable juice daily, spaced every hour. Coffee enemas are also used several times a day to remove toxins from disintegrating tumors or from the healing responses of dysfunctional cells resulting from the effects of Gerson Therapy. To further support the detoxification process and as part of the treatment, Dr. Gerson's procedures require the use of certain dietary supplements daily or every other day.
This method requires close patient involvement to attempt to achieve three specific physiological responses:
The core of the therapy, its biological basis, how the remission process occurs, details of the foods and materials used and not used, along with explanations of the reasons and instructions for use, are all detailed. Successful cases of cancer, epilepsy, stroke, and heart attack, etc., are also included.
In addition to general therapies for most cancers, the authors also offer customized therapies for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy, severely debilitated cancer patients, and cancer-free patients. However, according to Charlotte Gerson and Dr. Morton Walker, some patients are ineligible for treatment, including those who have undergone organ transplants, those on dialysis, and those who have had vital organs removed.
The book also provides guidance on how to perform the Gerson Therapy at home, along with detailed instructions on preparing patients, friends, and family for support. The last two chapters of the book feature success stories of several patients and recipes for meals prepared using only fresh, dried, and organically certified fruits, vegetables, grains, and sweeteners.
Personally, I found this book to be a very useful resource for anyone seeking alternative therapies. However, multiple coffee enemas, the use of dietary supplements, and treatment with castor oil should be done under the guidance and supervision of medical professionals. I also disclaim all responsibility if anyone reads this review and attempts this therapy on their own.
Another Perspective:
Dr. Gerson argues that salt is the root of many dietary health problems. Therefore, when applying this therapy, patients must completely abstain from salt. Along with that, patients are allowed to consume large amounts of vegetables and fruits, which are a rich source of potassium, to restore the optimal potassium-sodium balance in the body. This view is somewhat contrary to that of James J. DiNicolantonio, author of the book The Salt Fix: Why the Experts Got It All Wrong and How Eating More Might Save Your Life which I have reviewed. Assuming that salt is indeed the cause of health or disease, the question is: What type of salt should we eat, and in what quantity? Because nothing is inherently good or bad; the key is to find the most appropriate way to use it to maximize its benefits.
Furthermore, Dr. Gerson also mentions a range of other causes of illness, such as a weakened immune system, which can stem from a diet poor in nutrients. The amount of food consumed may be high, but the nutrient content is very low due to food grown with many chemical fertilizers, pesticides, growth stimulants, etc. Or other toxins may come from cosmetics, deodorants, dental fillings containing mercury compounds, etc. And when applying the Gerson Therapy, we must avoid all these sources of toxins.
About the authors:
The authors of the book are Charlotte Gerson and Dr. Morton Walker. Charlotte Gerson is the daughter of Dr. Max Gerson and the founder of the Gerson Institute, which is still active today in supporting patients. Most of the information in this book is rewritten based on Dr. Gerson's book, A Cancer Therapy: Results of Fifty Cases.
